What plant can I grow with abby?

You can grow any herb, vegetable, or flower that takes advantage of a deep water culture (DWC) system. Check out our Discord server to see what our community is growing in their abby! You can join here.

What is a Deep Water Culture (DWC) system?

A DWC system is a type of hydroponic farming that utilizes a water tank that is rich in nutrients and oxygen. The roots of the plant are submerged in the water tank while the plant grows as normal above.

You can find “hey abby” in both the App Store and Google Play Store.

Where can I purchase abby?

You can check our website product page here.

What country do you ship to?

Right now we ship to the Continental U.S. and Canada.

Where can I set up my abby?

We recommend placing your abby in an easily accessible area, such as the kitchen or living room. While abby fits and works well in any room of the house, we recommend not placing abby in the garage because it may get too hot or cold for the plant and equipment. Your device should be kept in an area where the temperature is between 68-86℉ and the humidity is between 30-60%.

Is there a warranty?

Yes, each abby grow box comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Will I need an AC or humidifier?

abby is not equipped with active cooling, therefore external temperatures will have an effect on abby's internal temperature. However, abby is equipped with adjustable intake and outtake fans that help the user maintain their humidity levels.

Does any smell leak out of abby?

The abby grow box comes with a custom-made carbon filter that uses two layers of activated carbon to remove most odors from the air. However, certain smells are a natural part of gardening and cannot be completely eliminated. Some plants are more pungent than others, which tend to be strongest toward the end of the growing cycle. We recommend changing your filters after each grow and keeping abby's door closed whenever possible.

How long does it take to grow a plant?

The length of a plant's life cycle depends on a number of factors, including its species, strain, and health. Many strains take 3 months to reach full maturity, but some will take less time or even longer.

Can I grow a seed or a clone?

You can grow either one. However, if accessible locally, the abby team recommends you start with a clone. Growing from a clone will shorten the time towards harvest by up to a month and require less maintenance in the initial growth process.

Where can I get a seed?

We recommend consulting your local dispensary for information on where to purchase seeds. You can also join our discord to consult our community members by clicking here.

What strain should I be growing?

This depends on personal preference. Your abby's state-of-the-art climate controls provides the perfect environment for any and all types of strains.

How many plants can I grow in abby?

At the moment, we recommend growing one plant at a time.

What type of water do I need to use?

We recommend using either purified, distilled, or reverse osmosis (RO) water. Tap water is not recommended, as it may have contaminants that can be harmful to plants.

How much water do I need?

For optimum results, fill abby's water tank with 3 gallons of water every week during vegetation and every three days during bloom (edited).

Will there be pests?

The abby grow box provides a separate growing space for your plant, effectively isolating them from any potential pests. However, it is important to keep your abby clean and free from pests that could get inside when the door is open. You should also regularly change the carbon filter.

How much/how often do I feed my plant in abby?

The fertilizer included in your subscription will take care of your plant's nutritional needs. Just add the nutrient and fertilizer packets after changing the water.

Do I need to check ppm/EC or pH?

We do recommend checking your plant’s pH and ppm to ensure optimal growing conditions. You can use a simple pH meter or our 4-in-1 meter (pH, EC, TDS, and temperature) to check the water. The recommended ranges for pH, temperature, PPM, and humidity depend on your plant’s growth stage. You can refer to our guide here.

Can I use my own nutrients?

We do not recommend using nutrients other than those that come with your subscription, as we cannot guarantee the quality of any third-party materials.

Can I grow photoperiod and/or autoflowers?

You can grow either with abby. However, we recommend you start from clones, which are only derived from photoperiod plants. Clones require less maintenance than seeds and produce higher yields.

Technical

How much electricity does abby use?

At maximum capacity, abby uses on average 1625 watts and less than 1400w during the veg stage settings. Per day, it’s about 1-2 KWH. In the state of California, the monthly electricity bill was under $5.

Does abby need to be connected to the internet?

Yes, abby requires a consistent Wi-Fi connection to work.

How loud are the fans?

The fans in abby are quiet, but not completely silent. They produce a very low hum, similar to a white noise machine.

When do the fans turn on?

The intake and exhaust fans will turn on and adjust their speed automatically based on abby's settings.

What happens if my power goes out?

If you experience a sudden loss of power, follow these steps to help protect your plant:

  • Drain half of the water out of your unit. You can do this by simply using a cup to empty half of the water tank. This allows your roots to take in oxygen that they would normally get when the air pump is powered.
  • If the power stays off for more than 8 hours, remove the water from the tank completely and then immediately pour it back in. There's no need to replace the water. This gives your plant a big boost of oxygen.
  • Make sure to give your plant some light during its regular light period. It doesn’t take much to keep the plant happy. Even shining a flashlight over it for a few minutes every couple of hours is enough.
  • If you can't get inside your unit during the outage:
    - First, try opening the door with the provided key.
    - If for some reason that does not work, remove the white silicone from abby's left side, insert the opener into the hole, and press down to open the front door.

Does abby need to be vented outside?

There is no need to vent abby. Each unit has two intake fans and two exhaust fans that constantly circulate the air inside.

Can you dry with abby?

Yes, the abby grow box includes a drying function. Once you’ve unlocked the harvesting stage, users can change stages to use abby for drying. Our team also offers a drying rack built specifically for abby, which you can check out here
