Thanksgiving Letter

Dear Hey abby fam,

Happy Thanksgiving! On behalf of the entire Hey abby team, I want to thank you for the love and support of this amazing community. It’s because of you that we’ve managed to thrive through another year in this challenging and competitive landscape.

This year, our community have grown larger than ever before. However, we’ve noticed that only a small percentage of growers are deeply engaged—a pattern that aligns with the "90-9-1 Rule" of online communities. As communities grow, typically 90% of members are passive participants, 9% are contributors, and just 1% are highly active contributors.

While we’re thrilled to see more growers join us, we’re also concerned that some may feel a loss of the "neighborhood" vibe within the community. This means some members may not have formed meaningful connections here, with fewer than 3-5 friends to share their journey. As a result, some may find themselves becoming mere observers. This was not our vision for the Hey abby community. We’ve always believed in building a space where every grower feels connected—an online neighborhood and a meaningful escape from the busy life.

The recent Grow Along event gave us an insight of what’s possible. For the first time, we witnessed an unprecedented level of engagement. Growers—both first-timers and experienced cultivators—were excited to share their progress, support one another, and embrace the experience. It was truly inspiring to see 25 growers moving at the same pace, cultivating their plants and their connections together. When we grow together, meaningful connections begin.

We can only imagine how these connections will evolve after three months of growing together—many of them could blossom into lasting friendships. In today's digital world, relationships are often reduced to a simple like, an emoji, or a follow button. Yet, deep down, many of us yearn for the sense of a true neighborhood—a place where everyone knows and trusts one another. Growing, at its core, is an agricultural act, and even in a digital space, it should hold onto that essence. Technology should enhance, not dilute, this sense of connection.

After the first Grow Along event, more will follow. These smaller, neighborhood-like groups within our larger community will allow growers to work together toward their harvests. Along the way, they’ll forge friendships, motivate one another, and even inspire those around them to start growing.

We truly hope we can work together towards this vision. While we can’t change the accelerating trend of digitalization, we can create small neighborhoods of connection through growing. In a way, this effort is a rebellion against digital tyranny that so often isolates us—and this spirit aligns perfectly with the essence of cannabis culture itself.
