OG Kush
Strain
OG Kush is one of the most iconic, sought-after, and best selling cannabis strains worldwide. This West-Coast native is known for its unique aroma, and potent effects—OG Kush strain hits even the most experienced smokers with a heavy buzz. It's also the backbone in the breeding and design of many other extremely popular strains, making a significant historical impact on cannabis culture, industry, and strains as we know them today.
Given its extreme popularity, there is much lore surrounding its origin and backstory. In this OG Kush strain review, we'll provide growing tips for this strain, and go over its effects and characteristics.
Growing Tips
OG Kush is not an easy strain to grow—in fact it's very particualr about what it likes and can handle. While it can be grown outdoors, the results may vary, so it’s not the best choice if you’re looking for consistency.
OG Kush strain thrives in a highly controlled climate. It prefers a warmer, tropical climate with adequate airflow and medium to strong lighting. OG Kush doesn't handle environmental stress well, like over-watering or drastic temperature changes, and requires consistent care.
OG Kush weed strain is also highly susceptible to powdery mildew and has a low resistance to mold or pests. Because of this, growers should stay on top of pest management and environmental factors to ensure a successful harvest.
Characteristics
OG Kush strain has a very unique and unforgettable aroma profile! It was a strain ahead of its time, boasting earthy, piney, citrus, and diesel-like scents, with hints of lemon and pine that immediately stand out. The flavor matches the aroma—strong, pungent, and a perfect blend of earthy, lemon, and pine notes, often accompanied by subtle skunky and diesel undertones.
The OG Kush buds themselves are dark and light green, dense, and incredibly sticky due to an abundance of trichomes. They often have such a heavy coating of resin that the buds seem to glow under light.

Origin & Use

Origin of OG Kush Strain
One popular belief is that it was first cultivated in South Florida in the early '90s. Matt “Bubba” Berger is said to have received some bag seeds that were believed to be Northern Lights from a Northern California harvest. When these seeds were germinated, a shorter, bushier plant with a unique growth pattern was selected. This plant was quite temperamental, often reacting to stress by hermaphroditing and producing pollen or seeds. It wasn’t until 1997 that the flowers from this strain were passed on to Kenji, a well-known LA grower who worked with Dr. Greenthumb and B-Real of Cypress Hill. From this, Kenji discovered bagseeds that led to the creation of "Bubba Kush."
The legend continues that Bubba Kush was crossed with Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush from Amsterdam to create OG Kush. The refined cut was brought to Josh-D, another popular LA grower, who is often credited for propagating and popularizing the strain. Josh-D refined the strain by selecting the best phenotypes, and his work played a crucial role in OG Kush's success and recognition.
Some believe that OG Kush was already in circulation in Southern California before Josh-D refined it, with the original version only using Chemdawg and Hindu Kush in its breeding.
Regardless of the exact origin story, OG Kush became a standout strain thanks to its complex terpene profile. It boasts an aroma with distinct notes of fuel, skunk, and spice, alongside its legendary potency. The name "OG" is often said to stand for “Original Gangster” or “Ocean Grown,” both of which emphasize the strain's authenticity and potency. Real OG Kush should have that classic lemon-pine-fuel scent, high THC levels, and a potent effect that delivers a heavy body high, with a clear-headed cerebral buzz to match.
